As a Consultant General Surgeon, I have enjoyed a diverse and challenging career in public service for the National Health Service, for the UK Defence Medical Services, and in national representative roles for the advancement of Surgical Excellence since graduation from the University of Cambridge in 1981.
My surgical practice is now centred on the Practice Plus Group Surgical Hub at the Royal South Hants Hospital, Southampton.
As a Surgeon in Academia, I have enjoyed a parallel career in research and teaching for the Universities of Leicester and Southampton over five decades.
As a Clinical Leader at international level, I was Editor in Chief of the European Journal of Surgical Oncology between 2003 and 2009. I have since played a leading role in the quality assurance of the worldwide academic medical and healthcare literature as a Subject Chair on the Advisory Board to the SCOPUS global bibliometric system.
As a Clinical and Digital Innovator, I have made a significant contribution to the transformative usability of the Electronic Patient Record in Southampton, the history of which is documented on this website. These contributions have been recognised with advisory board roles for the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, and with a Visiting Professorship of Southampton Solent University.
